"某所に手のつけられない荒くれの死刑囚がいて看守達もほとほと手を焼いていた。
そこで、神父が呼ばれた。その神父、彼と独房で会う時に、聖書の中に小さな紙切れを
しのばせていた。最初は「声を出すな。お前を救う作戦がたっている」とか言う感じで。
彼はそれを見て、神父はグルだと思い、自分のボスが助けてくれると確信していた。
会う度にメモが増えていった。「作戦は順調」とか「もうすぐだ」とか。
そして最後の日に渡されたメモにはこう書いてあった。「作戦決行は、最後の瞬間」。
彼にとってこの世で最後の日。最後の夕食を食べ、神父に最後の祈りを聞いてもらい、
看守に引き連れられて電気椅子に向かい、
最後に顔の前にカバーがかけられる瞬間まで彼は笑顔だった。
彼の死後、一体荒くれだった彼をどうやって大人しくさせたのか、
と問われた神父は、その看守に答えました。「私は彼に『希望』を与えたんです。」"
